“Bridge Street” is Perplexing Yet Powerful

Review - Posted by Kingston Theatre Alliance

Aug 24, 2025

“This is the second time Théâtre Roulant’s co-founders have tackled this very script, having first presented it in 2016. Within moments of the show beginning it is entirely clear why they felt the need to return to this story. Beaubien’s writing is mostly fragmented; it feels almost as though we are witnessing the piece from the perspective of Jake’s gradually fading mind.”

Aiden Robert Bruce made it out to the County to catch “Bridge Street”, the final show of Théâtre Roulant’s summer season. Read his review by clicking the link below.

Inspiration Everywhere

Culture - Picton Gazette

July 24, 2025

Maureen Jennings, best known for creating the Murdoch Mysteries, stopped by the Gazette office the other day for a chat about all things County.

“And they’re already planning next year’s production, Death in a Black Suit—another Christie-style mystery. But this time, Ms. Jennings intends to modify her script to suit the circumstances of Théâtre Roulant and the County.  “So, there’s going to be lots of little jokes about performing outdoors and the mosquitoes. But, also, we just met up with Peter Lockyer and talked about lighthouses! In the original version, which is set in Georgian Bay, they’re snowed in. I’m changing all that, and they’re going to be on Duck Island and stuck in a lighthouse!””

Murder Most Foul in “No Traveller Returns”

Review - Posted by Kingston Theatre Alliance

July 6, 2025

“Roy’s comedic lines aside, her character has frequent bouts of hysteria which draw chuckles from the audience. She thrives in her melodramatic role, and it suits many aspects of the story equally as well as the more realistic performances of her cast-mates. Fraser takes on another role that requires great exaggeration. He regularly leaps around the stage, occasionally wielding a red nose, performing corny magic tricks and delivering his lines so grandiose that one might think he had walked here directly from a Shakespearean comedy.”

Aiden Robert Bruce took the trek out to Prince Edward County to review “No Traveller Returns”! Check out their thoughts by clicking the link below.

Théâtre at the Roundabout - Posted in The Times

May 29, 2025

The hay wagon stage of Théâtre Roulant will once again be situated at the Waring House near the roundabout during the 2025 summer season. Last Sunday, the theatre gave a preview at The Andrew in Picton of its three upcoming productions. Playwright and founder Conrad Beaubien was recovering after hip replacement surgery and could not attend, but nevertheless sent his greetings and thanks via a note read by his colleague John Burns. Mr. Beaubien thanked the actors, volunteers and board members for their support, and reiterated that the arts are an essential part of the community. “The arts contribute to the well-being in a troubled world, and storytelling thrives at the core of our being,” he wrote.

We were blessed with the presence of ET the Mime for a one-day-only workshop on our Theatre Roulant stage at The Waring House on Wednesday. A special thank you to our workshop sponsors Kocherry Pharmacy and Wellington Pharmacy who helped keep the price down so more artists could participate.

ET taught us how to better use our imagination along with some secret mime techniques. “If it feels backwards and awkward … you’re doing it right!” He easily made everyone feel comfortable and confident and that makes for a fun and productive day.

Our summer season is now complete and the caravan is ready to be put to bed for a bit.

We thank all our sponsors and participants and hope to one day have ET back again.

Théâtre Roulant, the only horse drawn theatre caravan in Canada, will be spending the summer at the Waring House, a restaurant/conference centre in Prince Edward County. Founder and director, Conrad Beaubien, collaborated with the Waring House to give Théâtre Roulant a summer home for outdoor performances and expanding it into a dinner theatre venue.

Prior to COVID, Beaubien’s theatre group performed in community venues, but red tape and scheduling forced him to rethink logistics. An old hay wagon was purchased and given a second life with refurbishing and harness equipment enabling it to be pulled by two beautiful draft horses Susie and Sarah.

Due to COVID, performing outdoors was necessary so the wagon rolled around the County with actors and musicians giving performances to small audiences anywhere. But now, the company has decided to stay in one place for the summer.

CJPE talks with Beaubien about the company and why they’re trying out this new change.

What a fantastic turnout for the Wellington Canada Day Parade! We happily participated with our team of Blaine Way and horses Susie and Sarah pulling the caravan. Conrad Beaubien was on board waving to the crowd. John Burns and Sarah & Mike Kirby were along behind handing out cans of beans from our sponsor, Sprague Foods, along with our season bookmark.

After the parade, Susie and Sarah were on display for some selfies!

Our summer season opening night is only 3 days away! Book your tickets today and we’ll see you at The Waring House on the front lawn.

Happy Canada Day!

June 2, 2024

Building on the success of the past two seasons June 2 saw the largest and most successful season launch in Théâtre Roulant’s history.  The season features the world premiere of three plays including one by “Murdoch Mysteries” writer Maureen Jennings.  Tickets were at a premium as the large crowd were treated to previews of sections of all three of the season’s plays.  The horse drawn theatre wagon pulled up in front of St. Andrew’s Church at 3:00 pm to a packed house and the spectacular production was under way.

Artistic directors Conrad Beaubien and John Burns kicked off the extravaganza with rousing speeches. Director Ian Feltham introduced an intense dramatic piece of Beaubien’s “Private Rueben Pearce”.  A couple engaged in a power struggle over their farm after the titular character returned to Prince Edward County after leaving to fight in the American Civil War.

Next, playwright and director Mike Kirby’s “An Evening with Shakes-Beer (and Whine)” had the audience roaring with laughter in a preview of his sketch comedy take on Shakespeare. “The Courting Game” sketch is a reimagining of the meeting of Romeo and Juliet. The play promises more uproarious sketches inspired by Shakespeare.

Finally, the variety on offer this season was on full display as Jenning’s “Dying Like this” featured the dramatic meeting of a ne’er do well son who returns to talk to an old family friend who, unbeknownst to him, is joined by his father’s ghost.  All this was performed with an improvisational guitar score.

Fix The Roof - Go Fund Me

February 21, 2024

Help! The roof of Canada's only horse drawn theatre caravan - Théâtre Roulant - has sprung a leak! As we ready our 2024 season - our most exciting year yet - we have discovered fault lines in the caravan roof which means $8 thousand dollars of repairs! We hope to have the work undertaken in April of this year on site in Bloomfield, Ontario and ready in time for our horses, Susie and Sarah to pull our Théâtre Roulant caravan through Prince Edward County's Canada Day parade. We have engaged the expertise of a veteran roofing contractor familiar with arched roof design which is a signature style of historic travelling caravans.

This season will feature - count them - THREE world premiere stage plays including one by Maureen Jennings - the author of MURDOCH MYSTERIES!

We are pleased to receive any amount of donations toward our 8-thousand-dollar goal by the end of April! Click HERE to donate.

Thank you from all of us!

Behind The Scenes with Théâtre Roulant

JANUARY 12, 2024

We have been working on updating our website. You may have noticed that we are now highlighting Theatre Roulant with our parent company, Station Road Arts Collective, taking a bit of a back seat until our rolling caravan is more established. This will bring the focus to our brand and hopefully make it more recognizable to all. Our season line-up is starting to take shape! We don’t have all the details nailed down yet but we know what we want to do and we are working hard to make it all happen. A reminder to sign up for our monthly news letter so when the details are ready, you’ll know.

Happy New Year!
