Who are we?

Théâtre Roulant embodies the creative spirit of a group of professional theatre makers who entertain audiences with original works of drama, comedy and music. With many seasons under its belt, Théâtre Roulant has become a mainstay in the cultural landscape of Prince Edward County.

In 2022, Théâtre Roulant broke from the tradition of a bricks and mortar venue and put its stage on wheels and Canada’s only horse-drawn theatre was born. This travelling theatre model allow us to advantage the eclectic venues the region offers, and allows us to reach new audiences in a selection of locations and to align our productions with existing festivals, fairs and other events. Lower overhead means that revenues are mainly devoted to supporting actors, musicians, technical craft, production and production crew.

Théâtre Roulant is an incorporated not-for-profit organization with a volunteer board of directors. A key tenet of the theatre is its recognition of artists and the need to compensate them fairly so that they can further develop their talents and continue to live and work here. As such, fees are paid to our contributing artists, compensation that recognizes hard work, dedication and formidable talent.

Community at centre stage

In this disconnected and digital world, live theatre presents an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves and our humanity, by celebrating human imagination, creativity and powers of invention.

At Théâtre Roulant, we believe a community is connected by a sense of place and shared stories of adversity and triumph.

We enrich our community and local economy by bringing together theatre makers, audiences, sponsors and patrons from near and far. We support the development of local theatre talent and provide a one off cultural experience for residents and visitors to Prince Edward County.

Théâtre Roulant is committed to bettering the place where we live. Our mission is not just to entertain, but to inspire.

The creative cycle

Théâtre Roulant’s schedule is year round.

The new year sees us busy with design and planning, theatrical exercises and casting. As the days grow longer, our pace increases as we ready ourselves for our performances.

Each May, Théâtre Roulant hosts Fête, a free public event that marks the beginning of our season.

Throughout summer, stage meets audience in the magic and immediacy of out-of-door performances.

In the fall, with our season over, we start the development process again with winter workshops, review of submissions from Canadian authors and table reads.
